Observation of the rotational Doppler shift with spatially incoherent light

چکیده

The rotational Doppler shift (RDS) is typically measured by illuminating a rotating target with laser prepared in simple, known orbital angular momentum (OAM) superposition. We establish theoretically and experimentally that detecting the does not require incident light to have well-defined OAM spectrum but instead requires correlations within spectrum. demonstrate measurement of using spatially incoherent light.

Observation of the rotational Doppler shift of a white-light, orbital-angular-momentum- carrying beam backscattered from a rotating body

We observe the rotational Doppler shift of an orbital angular momentum (OAM)-carrying white-light beam after it is backscattered from a rotating object. Unlike the well known linear shift, this rotational shift is independent of the optical frequency, and hence each spectral component of the scattered light is shifted by the same value. Consequently, even a white-light source can give rise to a...

Coherent addition of spatially incoherent light beams.

We report on efficient coherent addition of spatially incoherent multimode laser beam distributions. Such addition is demonstrated within a multi-channel laser resonator configuration, obtaining more than 90% combining efficiency while preserving the good beam quality. We explain the rather surprising physical phenomenon of coherently adding spatially incoherent light by self-phase-locking of e...

Optical Doppler shift with structured light.

When a light beam with a transverse spatially varying phase is considered for optical remote sensing, in addition to the usual longitudinal Doppler frequency shift of the returned signal induced by the motion of the scatter along the beam axis, a new transversal Doppler shift appears associated to the motion of the scatterer in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis. We discuss here how this ...

(1¿1)-Dimensional modulation instability of spatially incoherent light

We present a comprehensive study of the one-dimensional modulation instability of partially spatially incoherent light in noninstantaneous self-focusing media. For this instability to occur, the nonlinearity has to exceed a specific threshold that depends on the coherence properties of the beam. Above this threshold a uniform-intensity partially spatially coherent wave front becomes unstable an...

Theory of Self-Trapped Spatially Incoherent Light Beams

We present a modal theory of self-trapping spatially incoherent light beams in any general nonlinear media. We find that a self-trapped incoherent beam induces a multimode waveguide which guides the beam itself by multiply populating the guided modes. The self-trapping process alters the statistics of the incoherent beam, rendering it localized. We find the conditions for self-trapping (“existe...
